SANTA'S   REINDEER JOIN  OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY  CAROLING

On Saturday, December 18th the FSA joined with local merchants and sponsored  Holiday Fest 2004. In past years we have held our annual caroling at the Church of the Abiding Presence. In 2003 we changed our venue and coordinated our event with the annual Kings Park Fire Department visit. This past year we expanded on that theme and arranged with local merchants to fund a special visit by Dasher and Dancer, two of Santa's most trusted reindeer.

The merchants of the Fort Salonga Shopping Center again provided financial support as well as refreshments. IGA provided cookies and candy canes while the Village Deli provided hot chocolate for the revelers. We are fortunate to have a shopping center with local merchants who connect with our community. IGA, Surf and Turf, Panda, Village Deli and Spotlight Spirits all contributed financially to help defray the costs of borrowing Santa's favorite reindeer. Unfortunately, CVS Community Relations chose not to respond to our request for assistance.

Kevin Byrne and Paul Graf  led the festivities with help from Nanette Dezendorf. Corey Byrne and Uncle Graf sang the Twelve days of Christmas with Santa as Ed Lesco worked the keyboard. Based on the huge turnout and the community spirit generated with both residents and merchants, we hope to make this an annual event.

ANNUAL  BRUNCH  AT  INDIAN  HILLS  CC

The community enjoyed a delightful meal at the Fort Salonga Association Spring Brunch held at Indian Hills Country Club in April. Over 130 neighbors and guests shared this morning with us as Association President Paul Graf provided an update on activities. We were delighted to enjoy insightful commentary from our Town Supervisors Frank Petrone and Patrick Vecchio.

Huntington Supervisor Petrone spoke of the Town's positive response to the appeals of local civic groups . To this end he sited the towns advocacy in protecting the bluffs along the Sound, law changes regarding zoning appeals and active engagement to prevent the development of a rail yard here. He then introduced. Mr. Vecchio as the senior supervisor of Suffolk County who “Tells it like it is!”

Pat spoke with fondness for our community which he calls home. Mr. Vecchio then outlined the town’s response to the proposed sale of the KPPC land to The Arker Companies. He said that the state has the responsibility to clean up it’s own mess created on the grounds of the former psychiatric center. The Town has continued in this effort by appealing decisions of the Empire State Development Corporation until the land is “made safe” by New York State. He believes that the state needs to assume the burden of the approximately $60 million cost of clean up. He echoed the community’s concern for the potential over development of the site. We were also joined by Assemblyman Andrew Raia and Town Board members Ed Werheim and Susan Berland.
The program ended with the awarding of our annual Raffle Prizes by Tony Geraci…. First Prize … $500 …. Harvey Kerievsky Second Prize … a digital camcorder donated by the McElhone family of Clayton Funeral Home…. The Gottfried Family , hird Prize…. $ 100 gift certificate courtesy of the IGA…. C. Van Dyke.

Our appreciation is extended to Directors Paul Mandelik, Dick Costello and Chris Thomas for their efforts in coordinating this event with Joe Caputo and the gracious staff of Indian Hills Country Club.

We hope to see you there next year!
